Rock Arts of Kerala Project

The Rock Arts of Kerala Project is an initiative of the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) that focuses on the systematic and scientific documentation of rock art sites across the state. Rock art, which includes engravings, paintings, and other markings on natural rock surfaces, represents one of the earliest forms of human expression and communication. These sites are important cultural resources that help us understand the social, symbolic, and environmental aspects of past human life.

This project aims to create a reliable and detailed record of these sites using scientific methods, including field surveys, mapping, photography, and other digital documentation. By doing so, the project seeks to build a comprehensive database that will support future research, conservation planning, and public awareness.

In addition to documentation, the project places strong emphasis on assessing the risk and vulnerability of rock art sites. Many of these sites are increasingly threatened by natural factors such as heavy rainfall, erosion, vegetation growth, and landslides, as well as human activities including vandalism and unregulated tourism. The project works to identify these threats and evaluate the level of risk to each site.

The long term aim of the Rock Arts of Kerala Project is to support the protection and preservation of these fragile cultural heritage resources. Through research, documentation, and risk assessment, the project contributes to developing informed conservation strategies and promotes the importance of safeguarding Kerala’s rock art heritage for future generations.
